Ask your MP to say NO to commercial-style surrogacy in the UK
The Nordic Model approach to prostitution (sometimes also known as the Sex Buyer Law, or the Swedish, Abolitionist, or Equality Model) decriminalises all those who are prostituted, provides support services to help them exit, and makes buying people for sex a criminal offence, in order to reduce the demand that drives sex trafficking. This approach has now been adopted in Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Northern Ireland, Canada, France, Ireland, and most recently, Israel.
Are a group of women from diverse backgrounds who are concerned at the proposals the UK Law Commission put forward in its 2019 consultation to reform UK law.They have reviewed the consultation documents and three main concerns with the Law Commission’s proposals are:
- The removal of the legal rights of the Surrogate Mother at birth
- Moving to a commercial-style surrogacy model here in the UK
- Reducing the age of women considered for surrogacy to 18 years old
The language used to erase ‘mother‘ and to label women as ‘surrogates’ or ‘carriers‘ is concerning and also how ‘compensation’ and ‘expenses’ are words used to disguise what is a payment for the purchase of a child.
